This book represents a forgotten part of the Civil War. It
is Jefferson Davis’s secret man in London. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the Confederacy tapped James D. Bulloch
to clandestinely acquire arms and ships for its navy. His first stop was the English capital that was hedging its bets on
who would win the America’s War Between the States and willing to provide the Confederacy with the naval technology
to fight the Union on the high seas. His mission continued for the length of the war and ended in grand failure, sending him
into self-imposed exile in Britain. More than a decade later, his nephew, a young Theodore Roosevelt, visited Bulloch in London
while researching his history of the naval battles of the War of 1812. Only after advising the twenty-three-year-old Roosevelt
did Bulloch decide to write his own book, putting to the record one of the least understood aspects of the Civil War. Out
of print and unavailable for more than forty years, Bulloch's dispassionate, meticulously researched story of building the
Confederate navy stands as one of the most important military memoirs of the war between the North and the South.

This book tells the story of frustrated Union commanders
who ordered a 500-foot-long underground tunnel dug in order to reach the fortifications of the long-besieged Confederates
at Petersburg, Virginia. They then ordered it packed with 8,000 pounds of black powder and the fuse lit.
The resulting explosion that resulted, created a 30-foot deep crater and the long awaited break in the Confederate line. Troops
of the North charged in, only to be greeted by a hail of bullets from the South. Again and again, the Yankees charged, and
again and again the unyielding Rebels drove them back. When it was finally all over, nearly an entire Northern division had
been annihilated. This is the story of what happened on that terrible day of ultra-bad luck.

This book is the famed writer and naturalist’s
rediscovered lost manuscript. It was found amongst his personal belongings and mass of papers he left behind after he died
peacefully of tuberculosis in the front parlor of his mother’s home on Main Street in Concord, Massachusetts, on the
morning of May 6th, 1862, at the age of forty-four years. These pages represents the final harvest of this great writer’s
last years which is a sacramental vision of nature, which grew out of a unique approach to the natural world that included
both science and mysticism. Wow! Probably one of Thoreau’s greatest literary masterpieces!

This book provides dramatic comparisons of Native
American and early colonial politics, history, and religion, and how these two cultures helped to create the pluralistic country
in which we live. The author, Russell Bourne, shows how both sides made heroic efforts to reach put to each other, despite
living in a war-torn world. The religious and cultural ideas of the Indians began to transform the colonists, turning many
into pantheists, communal villagers, and woodland warriors. Similarity, many of the Native Americans became evangelical Christians,
farmers, traders, and even commanders of large, nationalistic armies. Benjamin Franklin, marveling at the cooperation and
mutual respect of the Six Nations of the Iroquois, suggested that colonial leaders should follow their lead. Yet, in the end,
differences and treacheries drove them apart. Based on extensive historical research and consultation with indigenous people
and other knowledgeable sources.

As history’s great
figures strut across the stages of years while author Stanley Coren guides us with this book from the wings, and lovingly
picks out the canine cameos and gives every dog of distinction its day. He vividly depicts the dogs who have played a significant
role in the lives of many historical figures, and shows how their relationships with their people have directly influenced
the course of world events. In this unparalleled chronicle, we see how Florence Nightingale’s chance encounter with
a wounded dog changed her life by leading her to the vocation of nursing. We learn how Dr, Freud’s Chow Chow attended
all of his therapy sessions and how the life of the Fifth Dalai Lama was saved by a dog who shared his bed. We see the obsessive
love of King Charles II, who gave his spaniels hereditary titles of nobility so that they might go with him to the House of
Lords. From the canines who accompanied the rulers of ancient Egypt to those belonging to the Presidents of the United States,
up to the time of Bill Clinton, their stories are here. Fascinating reading

Geoffrey
O’Gara has written a fantastic book about the Wind River which runs from the alpine lakes of the Continental Divide
through the nestled valleys of the Northern Rocky Mountains and out onto high, wind-blown plains. More than a century ago,
the federal government set aside 44 million acres for the Shoshone and Arapaho tribes. Today, this Indian Reservation has
been reduced to only 2.3 million acres, but the battle over the control of this land --- and especially the river that runs
through it --- is far from over. The author has chronicled a remarkable story that illuminates the larger, unfinished struggle
for the ?heart? of the West. From the time of the Indian wars to the present day tribal council, to the complex struggle over
water rights, these printed pages reveals a powerful and moving chronology that is far from over.

political forces threatens this uniquely unfettered population. A brilliant literary work.

Geoffrey O’Gara has written a fantastic book about the Wind River which runs from the alpine lakes of the
Continental Divide through the nestled valleys of the Northern Rocky Mountains and out onto high, wind-blown plains. More
than a century ago, the federal government set aside 44 million acres for the Shoshone and Arapaho tribes. Today, this Indian
Reservation has been reduced to only 2.3 million acres, but the battle over the control of this land --- and especially the
river that runs through it --- is far from over. The author has chronicled a remarkable story that illuminates the larger,
unfinished struggle for the ?heart? of the West. From the time of the Indian wars to the present day tribal council, to the
complex struggle over water rights, these printed pages reveals a powerful and moving chronology that is far from over.

problems of the Earth’s declining species and offer hope that we may change their fate.

This book brings to life, on its pages, what it
was like to settle in new frontier communities, to travel in America and overseas and to try to earn a living in the economically
uncertain early years of the nineteenth century. This is the story of John Audubon (1785-1851) who was a great writer, artists,
and wildlife observer. The author, Shirley Streshinsky, has written a thorough biography of this, great woodsman and naturalist
that fills in a great many voids in Audubon’s life. A great book!.

Most people are not aware that women worked as
silversmiths, marking everything from spoons to massive ceremonial pieces. Because of the practice of registering a maker?s
marks at the local assay office of the goldsmith?s guild and the careful records kept at the Goldsmith?s Hall in London, it
was easy to establish who these craftspeople were. This impressive book contains a wealth of information!

who led a historic expedition that put the Colorado River on American maps and revealed the Grand Canyon to the entire world.
He is known today as an intrepid explorer, a careful scientist, a talented writer, and a dedicated conservationist. Donald
Worster, a leading Western historian, presents the first biography of this towering figure in almost fifty years. The writer
captures the fascinating details of Powell’s life, but the ?heart? of his work is that epic 1869 journey down the Colorado
that is a harrowing tale of adventure that is filled with lethal accidents and breathtaking discoveries. A tremendous book!

peacefully of tuberculosis in the front parlor of his mother’s home on Main Street in Concord, Massachusetts, on the
morning of May 6th, 1862, at the age of forty-four years. These pages represents the final harvest of this great writer’s
last years which is a sacramental vision of nature, which grew out of a unique approach to the natural world that included
both science and mysticism. Wow! Probably one of Thoreau’s greatest literary masterpieces!

Known for her beautifully observed and illustrated
books about the rivers, deserts, and mountains of the West, Ann Haymond Zwinger in this book, focuses on the guiding principles
of her life as a naturalist. Even as she writes, she ?looks? with a notebook and a pencil, believing that ?to know the world
intimately is the beginning of caring?. She easily moves from the details associated with the larger patterns of the natural
environment that links one to the entire world, to the narrowed-down view of the filaments of mushrooms that accesses us to
the inter-connectedness of life. As an artist, writer, and naturalist, she feels that her responsibility is to create the
appropriate links between scientific natural history and the reader who can learn to love the land. This book is her testament

This book provides dramatic
comparisons of Native American and early colonial politics, history, and religion, and how these two cultures helped to create
the pluralistic country in which we live. The author, Russell Bourne, shows how both sides made heroic efforts to reach put
to each other, despite living in a war-torn world. The religious and cultural ideas of the Indians began to transform the
colonists, turning many into pantheists, communal villagers, and woodland warriors. Similarity, many of the Native Americans
became evangelical Christians, farmers, traders, and even commanders of large, nationalistic armies. Benjamin Franklin, marveling
at the cooperation and mutual respect of the Six Nations of the Iroquois, suggested that colonial leaders should follow their
lead. Yet, in the end, differences and treacheries drove them apart. Based on extensive historical research and consultation
with indigenous people and other knowledgeable sources.

This book represents a forgotten
part of the Civil War. It is Jefferson Davis’s secret man in London. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the Confederacy
tapped James D. Bulloch to clandestinely acquire arms and ships for its navy. His first stop was the English capital that
was hedging its bets on who would win the America’s War Between the States and willing to provide the Confederacy with
the naval technology to fight the Union on the high seas. His mission continued for the length of the war and ended in grand
failure, sending him into self-imposed exile in Britain. More than a decade later, his nephew, a young Theodore Roosevelt,
visited Bulloch in London while researching his history of the naval battles of the War of 1812. Only after advising the twenty-three-year-old
Roosevelt did Bulloch decide to write his own book, putting to the record one of the least understood aspects of the Civil
War. Out of print and unavailable for more than forty years, Bulloch’s dispassionate, meticulously researched story
of building the Confederate navy stands as one of the most important military memoirs of the war between the North and the
South.

This book tells the story
of frustrated Union commanders who ordered a 500-foot-long underground tunnel dug in order to reach the fortifications of
the long-besieged Confederates at Petersburg, Virginia. They then ordered it packed with 8,000 pounds of black powder and
the fuse lit. The resulting explosion that resulted, created a 30-foot deep crater and the long awaited break in the Confederate
line. Troops of the North charged in, only to be greeted by a hail of bullets from the South. Again and again, the Yankees
charged, and again and again the unyielding Rebels drove them back. When it was finally all over, nearly an entire Northern
division had been annihilated. This is the story of what happened on that terrible day of ultra-bad luck.

The author devoted three years
of his life adult life and a small fortune to take on polar bears and dodge icebergs to sail an open-decked wooden ship that
resembled what was little more than an oversized canoe. But, he wanted to become a Viking, so he had an eccentric boat builder
on a small Maine island build a replica of a square-rigged Viking cargo ship (known as a ?Knarr?), and had it shipped to the
southern tip of Greenland. Here, he and his grab-bag crew of eleven, departed in attempt to follow in the wake of Leif Erikson's
triumphant voyage a thousand years before. The events of this contemporary voyage was often times thrilling, at times slapstick,
sublime, and even outrageous.

As history’s great figures strut across
the stages of years while author Stanley Coren guides us with this book from the wings, and lovingly picks out the canine
cameos and gives every dog of distinction its day. He vividly depicts the dogs who have played a significant role in the lives
of many historical figures, and shows how their relationships with their people have directly influenced the course of world
events. In this unparalleled chronicle, we see how Florence Nightingale’s chance encounter with a wounded dog changed
her life by leading her to the vocation of nursing. We learn how Dr, Freud’s Chow Chow attended all of his therapy sessions
and how the life of the Fifth Dalai Lama was saved by a dog who shared his bed. We see the obsessive love of King Charles
II, who gave his spaniels hereditary titles of nobility so that they might go with him to the House of Lords. From the canines
who accompanied the rulers of ancient Egypt to those belonging to the Presidents of the United States, up to the time of Bill
Clinton, their stories are here. Fascinating reading!

La Isabela (named in honor of the Queen of Spain),
founded by Christopher Columbus during his second voyage, and was established among the indigenous Tainos people. This was
the first Spanish settlement in the New World, and great hopes rested upon it. However, just five years after its founding,
it was in ruins. The authors, relying upon their ten year archaeological investigation of the site, have written a fascinating
book that stands out as the best on this subject. They conclude that the failure of this piece of civilization did not lay
with Columbus as a poor planner, but because he attempted to establish a European cultural identity in an environment whose
landscape and people did not respond well to this type of colonization.

that fills in a great many voids in Audubon’s life. A great book!.

Geoffrey O’Gara has written a fantastic
book about the Wind River which runs from the alpine lakes of the Continental Divide through the nestled valleys of the Northern
Rocky Mountains and out onto high, wind-blown plains. More than a century ago, the federal government set aside 44 million
acres for the Shoshone and Arapaho tribes. Today, this Indian Reservation has been reduced to only 2.3 million acres, but
the battle over the control of this land --- and especially the river that runs through it --- is far from over. The author
has chronicled a remarkable story that illuminates the larger, unfinished struggle for the ?heart? of the West. From the time
of the Indian wars to the present day tribal council, to the complex struggle over water rights, these printed pages reveals
a powerful and moving chronology that is far from over.

Brutal beauty and the poetic hauntings of the
Continental Divide tells of the story of the last remnants of the Old West, America’s mythic landscape, where the past
and present are barely discernible from one another and where people’s lives are still intrinsically linked to their
natural surroundings. Author Frank Clifford has vividly captured the challenges of the Divide today through some portraits
of some memorable characters, while capturing the tide of change that threatens this environment as economic, social, and
political forces threatens this uniquely unfettered population. A brilliant literary work!
